In his lifetime, Randy Trudeau walked many paths and tried his hand at many
occupations, but his love of art and his traditions remained with him. Randy
Trudeau was an Odawa from Buzwah, Ontario. He has painted since 19
years old, when he participated in a summer art project sponsored by the
Manitoulin Arts Foundation.
Today his works are represented in major national collections and
exhibited worldwide. Randy was dedicated to expressing the teachings of
his people through art, painting carefully detailed figures with
acrylics on canvas. He is an established part of woodlands-style
painting, but he also mastered and incorporated Western techniques into
his style. Randy's art illustrates a sacred way of life. We get the
sense that his subjects have beliefs, desires and motivations, and
we are only given hints at the full story. When one recieved one of
Randy's paintings, the artist would often give that person the story
that goes with that painting. This passing down of wisdom along with
an artwork exemplifies the spiritual role these artworks embody.
They are pieces of legend, laden with symbol and meaning.
